Description

The Dahlia Flowered Mix Zinnia is an annual plant with pompon-shaped flowers that range in color from white, purple, red, pink, and yellow. They make for great, long-lasting cut flowers.

Developed in 1919, this heirloom variety has tightly packed petals that bend downward slightly on the ends.

Planting

Turn over soil and work in 2–3 inches of compost or peat moss to help improve soil fertility and drainage. Plant seeds about one quarter to one half inch deep. Once seedlings are about 3 inches tall, thin them to maximize air circulation and prevent powdery mildew.

If starting zinnias indoors, fill pots with potting mix. Saturate mix with water and place two zinnia seeds into each cell or pot. Press into soil for good seed-to-soil contact, then cover with one half inch of the potting mix. Place your zinnias in an area that will receive plenty of warmth (65–70°F) and light. Keep seeds moist. Once seedlings reach about 2½–3 inches tall, they are ready to be transplanted outdoors. Zinnias may be transplanted with ease, as it is possible to move the plants when they are in full flower!

Seed Saving

Allow flower heads to dry completely on the plant. Each flower will be dark brown and dry to the touch when it is ready to harvest. Harvesting a flower too early will result in immature seeds that won't germinate. Pull dry flowers off the plant and spread paper towels over a clean, flat surface. Take a dry flower and "flail" the seed head (hit it gently to release the seeds), pull it apart, or rub it between your fingers over the paper towel to release seeds. Seeds are small and arrow-shaped. Repeat this process with all of your dried flowers, discarding the petals and only keeping the seeds. Store in a cool, dry place for up to two years.
