Planting

Sow in average garden soil in a sunny location, after the danger of spring frost. For earlier blooms, start seeds indoors in peat pots four weeks before outdoor planting time.

Before planting, soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Plant near a trellis or fence so that plants have a structure to lean against as they grow and climb. Thin seedlings when they are 3–4 inches in height, with the final spacing of the plants 6–8 inches apart. This variety grows excellently in containers with trellis support.

Seed Saving

Choose a dry day to harvest your seeds. If it rained the day before, wait until tomorrow. Go into the garden in the late morning, after the dew dries up, and place a bag or container under the seed pods for collecting. Snap off entire pods and let them fall into the container.

You will have a mixture of seeds and chaff in your container; separate the seeds from the chaff by pinching the pods between your forefinger and thumb to release brown/black seeds. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark area for up to two years.
