Description

This classic variety has been found in gardens for generations! The Henderson Lima Bean grows a productive, bushy plant that does well both in garden beds and containers. No need for a trellis; this variety grows low to the ground in a compact bush.

Henderson Lima Beans are excellent for storing and delicious in soups, stews and salads.

Planting

Beans are a warm season crop. Sow seeds directly outdoors in a sunny location after danger of last frost, spring to early summer. In rows 24–36 inches apart, sow seeds about 4–8 inches apart and cover with 1 inch of fine soil. Firm lightly and keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Thin to stand about 6 inches apart once seedlings reach a height of 2 inches. Harvest tender pods frequently to keep plants producing.

Harvesting

To harvest Henderson Bush Lima beans, pick the pods when they are firm, plump, and bright green, but before the beans inside fully develop for fresh consumption. For dry beans, allow them to dry on the vine.

Gently pull the pods from the plant, taking care not to rip the stems or vines.

Seed Saving

Saving bean seed is easy! Leave pods on the plants and harvest once they have hardened and dried out. Crack open the shells by hand, or stomp pods on a tarp if difficult to break. Separate seeds from chaff and store in a cool, dark place for up to three years. To ensure true-to-type seed, separate varieties by 30 feet in the garden.
