Description

This basil is a wonderful hand-selected mix of our favorite culinary varieties including Genovese, Corsican, lemon, and lime basils. This cornucopia makes a great addition to your herb garden!

Enjoy the varied textures and flavors of this mix in fresh summer salads, on sandwiches, or as a garnish on your favorite Italian pizza and pasta recipes.

Planting

This Basil Mix thrives in containers and is a companion for tomatoes, peppers, and root vegetables because of its natural insect repellent properties. Choose a planter that is between 10-12 inches deep or a sunny area of the garden. Plant basil plants close in containers or 4-6 inches apart in the garden.

Harvesting

Harvest basil leaves once the plant is 6-8 inches tall by cutting leaves one inch from the plant stem. Basil has the best flavor when picked in the morning once the dew dries. Harvest frequently to promote growth.

Basil is best kept at room temperature with the stems submerged in water. Refrigeration will wilt and brown the leaves, but basil retains flavor when frozen.

Seed Saving

Allow basil to bolt in the summer heat and it will grow a tall stem (2-3 feet) with delicate white flowers. Once the flower pods dry and turn brown, cut off the stems and hang them upside down in a paper bag until flower pods shatter and seeds are released.

Remove any chaff and store seeds in a cool, dry place for up to three years.
